POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Software Manager, the Software Test Co-op Student will support the verification and validation of software applications used to configure, control, monitor, and test underwater sonar systems. This position provides hands-on experience working with real-world hardware and software systems in a multidisciplinary engineering environment.
The successful candidate will assist with manual and automated testing activities, test development, defect reporting, and software quality improvement initiatives while working closely with software, hardware, and systems engineers.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and execute manual test procedures for desktop, embedded, and system-level software applications.
- Assist in the creation and maintenance of automated test scripts and test frameworks.
- Perform functional, regression, integration, and acceptance testing of sonar control and monitoring software.
- Record, track, and verify software defects using issue tracking tools.
- Analyze test results and work with engineers to identify and troubleshoot software issues.
- Assist with validation of software releases prior to deployment.
- Support software-hardware integration testing using laboratory sonar and electronics equipment.
- Create and maintain test documentation, test reports, and validation records.
- Participate in software design reviews, sprint activities, and technical discussions as appropriate.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of software test processes, tools, and practices.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
- Currently enrolled in a Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or related degree program.
- Completed third or fourth year of study and eligible for a co-op work term.
- Knowledge of software development and testing principles.
- Experience programming in one or more languages such as Python, C++, C#, or Java.
- Familiarity with version control systems such as Git.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- High level of energy, enthusiasm, curiosity, and willingness to learn.
PREFERRED SKILLS
- Experience developing automated tests or test scripts.
- Familiarity with software quality assurance, verification, and validation practices.
- Exposure to hardware-software integration or embedded systems.
- Experience with issue tracking and test management tools.
- Knowledge of networking, serial communications, or instrumentation interfaces.
- Familiarity with Agile development methodologies.
- Interest in robotics, marine technology, sensors, sonar systems, or related technologies.
- Familiarity with LLM based coding analysis and test tools.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
