Position as Senior Consultant at the Department of Pathology, combined with Adjunct Professor (professor II)/Associate Professor (førsteamanuensis, 20 % position) at the Institute of Clinical Medicine

The Institute of Clinical Medicine has a vacant position as Adjunct Professor (professor II)/Associate Professor (førsteamanuensis) of Pathology. The part-time academic position (20 %) is combined with a full-time (100 %) senior consultant position at Akershus University Hospital, Department of Pathology.

Relating to the main position:

The Department of Pathology is organized under the Division of Diagnostics and Technology. The department receives samples from Akershus University Hospital, private practicing specialists and primary healthcare services in the area. The department has a large diagnostic caseload, particularly in gastrointestinal, breast, urogenital, gynecological pathology and cytology. Last year, the department reported approximately 38,000 biopsies, 40,000 cytology samples (including fine needle cytology), 30.000 HPV analyses and performed approx. 250 autopsies. There is focus on precision medicine, and the pathologists all participate in the molecular diagnostics.  The department has 15 senior consultants, including 3 associate professors, as well as 5 residency/training positions. In addition, 1 senior consultant and 1 resident hold a PhD degree and combine clinical work with research.

The department is known for being well organized, having a quick turnaround time and a friendly working environment. The department is accredited in acc. ISO EN 15189
 
The department offers good opportunities for professional development. In addition to the diagnostic workload, other activities include teaching, research and multidisciplinary work. The department is approved as a training institution in pathology for the entire specialization education. The department has a degree of subspecialisation and consultants participate in internal professional groups responsible for professional updating and interdisciplinary meetings.

The department works closely with other clinical departments at the hospital as well as the clinical molecular biology department (EpiGen). The department has a central role in medical education, primarily medical students and residents, but also regularly contributes to national and European meetings.
 
The candidate is expected to have extensive research experience in experimental and/or clinical pathology and be able to establish a research group in the department and build synergies with research in other departments. Experience and competence in clinical studies, and in translational research, would be considered an advantage. The ability to initiate translational research in collaboration with other clinical departments at the hospital will be emphasized. Within this role the employee will be expected to contribute to further scientific and professional development in the department, including  initiation of doctoral projects.

By appointment, 40% of the working hours of university work are allocated.

Interpersonal skills and the ability to create an attractive research environment, plans for research and ambitions relating to the applicant's personal teaching practice will be emphasized. The successful applicant will participate in teaching of medical students in all areas of pathology at the University of Oslo. As a main rule, interviews will be held and references collected. Applicants may also be required to give a trial lecture.
