PhD student

Offentlig forvaltning

A three-year PhD Research Fellowship is available at the Section for Cancer Cytogenetics, Department of Pathology, Oslo University Hospital, Norway.

The successful candidate will join an active and internationally recognized research environment focusing on cancer genomics and transcriptomics. The project will involve translational research aimed at improving our understanding of the genetic mechanisms underlying cancer development and progression.
The PhD candidate will work in close collaboration with clinicians, molecular biologists, and bioinformaticians and will have access to state-of-the-art technologies and research infrastructure. The candidate for this position will join an existing experienced group with established expertise in cancer genetics and cytogenetics and will have the opportunity to work collaboratively across multiple cancer forms in the field of solid tumors (mostly sarcomas).

The PhD project focuses on investigating the cellular and molecular heterogeneity of soft tissue sarcomas (STS), a rare and diverse group of malignant tumors originating from mesenchymal tissue. The aim of the project is to identify prognostic and predictive biomarkers using the latest advanced technique, spatial transcriptomics, in combination with genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and histology at the single-cell level. The focus is on mapping spatial heterogeneity, both within individual tumors and across tumors from different patients, to improve classification and treatment strategies for STS. The goal is to develop a more precise, molecularly informed subclassification system that can support personalized treatment, similar to approaches already implemented for certain leukemias and other sarcomas.

The Section for Cancer Cytogenetics performs advanced cancer cytogenetic diagnostics analyzing neoplasia-specific genome abnormalities in cancer cells, in addition to performing research in biomedicine to gain new knowledge that can contribute to better patient care. We are looking for a motivated and results-oriented PhD student for a three years scholarship financed by the South East Regional Health (Helse Sør Øst).
