Managing Director - UK (Logistics - Dry)

The Managing Director, UK is a significant position in the logistics leadership team, playing a vital role in the achievement of the overall business objectives. A strong commercial player, the successful candidate will take overall leadership responsibility for more than 300 colleagues, 140 owned LGV, 19 Transit sheds/warehouses, and satellite depots across the UK, as well as directing a team of experienced logistics managers. This is a vital role within DFDS, as the Immingham operation provides a service to most areas of the DFDS network. Strong international collaboration, service and cost control is fundamental to this position, as it requires you to control a unique mix of cost centres, together with profit and loss responsibility, whilst retaining a strong focus on growth within and outside the Immingham terminal. A key aspect will be driving the development of existing business, coinciding with finding new business and innovative opportunities to support the DFDS core business and growth strategies.

 

The ideal candidate will have proven experience in successfully leading multi-site logistics operations with full P&L responsibility, combined with a track record of business development, resulting in consistent revenue and margin growth. Outstanding interpersonal skills, a client-driven approach, and the ability to build strong working relationships with customers, suppliers, and colleagues at all levels, alongside communications skills which enable effortless interaction across multiple locations / countries. Naturally in a role of this nature, you will be expected to have strong self-motivation, a flexible and dynamic personality to address immediate and long-term challenges, together with the energy to work in a demanding environment. A strong charismatic and people focused leadership style with an emphasis on gaining competitive advantage and a record of delivering results through people engagement. We require you to have the ability to analyse data, both financial and operational, recognise trends, anticipate problems, drawing sound conclusions. All culminating with a pragmatic approach to problem solving and leading from the front.

 

Main responsibilities of the role:

 

  • Lead the team in UK to maintain and develop DFDS’ position as market leader.
  • Build a strong, close relationship with customers and act as the senior point of contact.
  • Work closely with the logistics management team to ensure the delivery of revenue and profit targets.
  • Constantly review operational performance to ensure contractual obligations are being met / exceeded and that customers are satisfied.
  • Ensure that the DFDS values and vision are achieved through the development of an engaged, open, interactive, and communicative culture.
  • Regularly review and define the capability required in the team and generate career progression opportunities for individuals who have the potential to develop.
  • Develop key customer relationships at all levels to ensure the business is secure and opportunities for growth are identified.
  • Identify opportunities to add value to existing operations through innovation, technology, and continuous improvement.
  • Travel as required.
