Linux systems administrator with an interest in data analytics

Background
The Norwegian Veterinary Institute (NVI) is looking for a person motivated to make a difference in public and animal health and welfare in a permanent fulltime position as a linux systems administrator.
The NVI is continuously implementing new methods for disease surveillance, diagnostics, preparedness and research. Presently, the NVI is in the process of introducing new DNA sequencing technology, which requires the establishment of a linux environment for data analysis. To ensure a sustainable development of this linux environment, the section for Infrastructure is strengthening its in-house linux resources with this position. In this position, you will contribute to and help shape the Linux development roadmap together with the IT network team. In addition, you will be working closely with IT skilled bioinformatics researchers across the institute.

The Institute is currently in the process of relocating from Oslo, Norway to Ås, which is approximately 35 km from downtown Oslo.
Work description
Your main responsibility will be to set up and maintain a linux based high performance computing data analysis environment for the NVI. The linux infrastructure is provided by an external provider, and you are expected to work closely with them, as well as with relevant people internally. In addition, you will assist with managing data transfer systems, databases, and tools for analysis for various types of biological data. You will also work closely with the in-house bioinformatics group, and assist them with installation and management of bioinformatics software and data. Depending on interest, there is also an opening for developing analysis tools in collaboration with the bioinformatics team and other researchers. In this position, you will play an important role in the future development of the NVI biological data infrastructure and data analysis tool kit. We offer opportunities for knowledge development, and have high regards for knowledge sharing. Assistance by the research/bioinformatics staff currently at the Norwegian Veterinary Institute will be given to help direct the work.
Required background :
• Master’s degree or equivalent work experience within IT
• Linux system administration and shell scripting experience
• High performance computing experience including cluster resource management tools
• Experience in development and operation of SQL databases
• Experience with software development
• Python, R, java or other programming language knowledge
• Excellent communication in English
Desired skills:
• HPC queue management with slurm, and container technologies (Docker/Singularity)
• Experience with web development projects
• Experience with bioinformatics, bioinformatics tools and pipelines
• Participation in development of free and open software
Personal qualities:
• Ability and interest in working in a multi-disciplinary team
• Self-driven and capable of working independently
• Ability and interest in learning new skills, using new methods to solve problems, and an interest in sharing knowledge with others
Contract and salary
The current position is offered as a full time (37,5 hr per week) position.
The salary follows the regulations set by the Norwegian State for the category of 1364 senior adviser, depending on qualifications. There is a compulsory membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund with a deduction of 2% of the salary, giving opportunities for favourable loan offers.
