Senior Grid Engineer, Grid Services

The business area European Wind and Solar (E) is responsible for development and ownership of wind and solar assets in Europe. The business area is also responsible for the project execution of large projects in Statkraft, the group procurement function and development of new business opportunities including Grid Services Projects.

We are now recruiting a Senior Grid Engineer for the business area’s Grid Services team. The team is responsible for grid delivery and integration for our renewables portfolio. The Grid Services team is also responsible for the project development and execution of grid system services projects, including battery projects, to compliment Statkraft’s onshore wind and solar portfolio. The primary focus of this role is in delivering the grid connection for the 500MW NISA offshore wind farm and the 49MW Belcamp Power Plant, a gas generator co-located with the NISA onshore substation. These are 2 key projects in the Statkraft portfolio currently in the consenting phase of development. You will report to the Head of Grid Services, Ireland.

The role is based in our Cork Airport Business Park office but involves frequent meetings with stakeholders in Dublin.

Your role:

As a Senior Grid Engineer your main responsibilities will be:

  • Manage the overall delivery of grid connection for the NISA offshore wind farm and the Belcamp Power Plant from a commercial and technical perspective. This will include grid connection optioneering, grid connection contract process, consenting, design and functional specification, construction, commissioning/testing, energisation and operation.
  • Act as primary point of contact with ESB Networks and Eirgrid to project manage the delivery of individual project connections.
  • Advise the financial modelling team of all the key grid related value drivers of the projects (grid capital cost including provision for risk and pass through, operating cost, network charges, electrical losses, constraints, curtailment).
  • Co-ordinate with the NISA Engineering Lead on grid and electrical design input to enable the development team prepare and progress planning permission applications.
  • Co-ordinate with the NISA Engineering Lead to ensure the project team has sufficient technical guidance and support during the procurement and delivery of grid and electricals balance of plant scope of work.
  • Manage the capacity contracts associated with these projects to ensure they are delivering and reporting as per the obligations of these contracts and maximising the revenues for capacity.
  • Manage the system service strategy for these projects to ensure maximum value-creation from the DS3 market.
  • Support the Grid Services team in other grid services projects, including batteries, providing input on aspects such as grid connections, capacity and system service market participation.
  • Track and influence the relevant policy around grid, capacity and system services in Ireland. Maintain strong relationships with industry groups, system operators and regulators.  
Your profile:
  • University degree within relevant field, ideally electrical engineering.
  • Minimum 5 years work experience in the power/ transmission or renewable sector and a clear affinity with renewable projects.
  • Experience in delivering grid connections in Ireland.
  • A knowledge of the Capacity and System Service markets in Ireland will be a distinct advantage.
  • Demonstrated experience of the procurement and tendering process.
  • Commercial awareness and ability to pitch strategy to senior management.
  • Strong communication, relationship building and management skills including organisational ability and a target oriented; demonstrated ability to prioritize.
  • Strong technical understanding of renewable energy technology with experience of contracts and technical appendices for main technology supply contracts.
  • Ability to work within formal project management structures to deliver on time and budget.
  • Ability to provide innovative solutions to complex issues in a timely manner.
  • Strong Excel, Word, Powerpoint and Outlook skills expected.
  • Independent self-starter. Ability to manage a large workload, often providing support to processes managed by colleagues, while prioritizing tasks and effectively juggling competing deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills in English.
