Available position as Safety Manager

Pilot Flight Academy is the Nordic region's largest and most modern flight school and is located at Torp Sandefjord Airport and Notodden Airport. The school has a large international environment with close to 400 students. Our goal is to train professional and skilled pilots who are sought after by the airlines. The company is in positive growth and development and we now need to strengthen our organization.

Due to our growth, we have introduced a new approach and structure to our Aviation Safety and Regulatory Compliance team. This role would deliver the regulatory aviation Safety Manager role for our Approved Training Organisation (ATO). The ATO currently operates a diverse fleet of approximately 10 Cessna 152s, 12 DA40s, 7 DA42s and 6 FNPT II simulators spread across 3 training locations in Norway and the USA.

Core duties will involve, but not be limited to:

  • Fulfilling the role of Safety Manager for the ATO
  • Deputising as Compliance Monitoring Manager
  • Establishing an effective working relationship with the Compliance Monitoring Manager

Management of:

  • Functional leadership and direction of safety
  • Supporting the compliance audit schedule where required
  • Safety Management System (SMS) programme (development, training, communications, analysis and implementation)
  • Completing safety audits and managing their outcomes ensuring the findings are communicated effectively and managed efficiently
  • Establishment and maintenance of common aviation safety standards across PFA
  • Business continuity and emergency response plans (ensuring they are in place, effectively implemented and local management teams are competent to follow them)
  • Distribution and maintenance of SMS manual
  • Preparation, maintenance and delivery of aviation safety training materials to support the activities above
  • Preparation of regular reports to senior management
  • Regular attendance at the Safety Review Boards and Safety Action Groups
  • Delivering safety newsletters, notices and campaigns
  • Acting as the primary aviation safety point of contact with regulators and client airlines
  • Influencing the safety culture

Essential skills and experience:

  • Professional and pragmatic approach to aviation safety management and regulatory compliance
  • Qualified aviation safety manager with a proven track record in delivery of aviation safety, to enable the successful applicant to gain N-CAA approval to fulfil the regulatory post of Safety Manager
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, to enable the preparation and delivery of information at all levels of the company
  • Proven track record in providing leadership in safety messaging
  • Ability to influence, across the business, in areas of aviation safety
  • Good understanding of the EU regulatory structure pertinent to the regulation of civil aviation
  • Good understanding of international principles and practice pertinent to civil aviation flight safety
  • Competent with MS Office together with the willingness to learn the use of Opscom and several internal software applications.
  • Ability to work within non-EASA regulatory frameworks e.g. non-EU aviation regulators etc.
  • Demonstrable success in managing a variety of people, tasks, activities and the successful delivery of a Safety Management System
  • Understanding of the inherent risks, and mitigation strategies, associated with ab-initio pilot training
  • Ability to cover the functions of the Compliance Monitoring Manager as a deputy
  • Ability to fulfil the travel requirements of the role

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Experience of working with Opscom or similar aviation safety database
  • Knowledge of EASA rules applicable to Approved Training Organisations
  • Previous nominated post holder experience
  • International outlook and the ability to deal comfortably with various cultures
  • Flexibility and the ability to adapt quickly to changing requirements
  • A proactive approach to driving a just safety culture
  • Experience from airline/commercial air ops
  • Experience as a Flight Instructor (FI and/or TRI)
