Statkraft AS

Commercial Analyst in Algorithmic Intraday Trading (m/f/d)

Energi- og vannforsyning

Statkraft has been making clean energy possible for over a century. That’s what we offer. 125 years of unrivalled expertise in supplying the world with what it needs most. We envision a world that runs entirely on renewable energy. Because in the fight against climate change, we don’t see renewable energy as part of the solution – we believe it must be the solution. With us, you’ll shape a career that is truly forward-facing with many amazing opportunities and offerings to match.

But there’s more work to be done – that’s why we need you to join us.

Working in Energy Management:

Providing power efficiently and reliably is among the core challenges in times of increasing solar and wind energy production. Here, our intraday trading teams are making a vital and exciting contribution. We are active on all relevant short-term markets, being the market leader in integrating renewables in our core markets Germany and the UK. In total, Statkraft manages over 15.000 MW of renewable capacity across Europe, as a result we contribute significantly to the successful integration of renewable energy into the overall energy landscape. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year in continuous operation.

What we do:

Statkraft makes use of algorithmic trading and virtual power plant solutions that automatically balance renewables portfolios, trade and steer asset flexibility in real-time and run proprietary trading activities. These algorithms make millions of decisions per day, send orders to the exchange and steer the physical assets. For us this requires a wide spectrum from fundamental analysis to hands-on implementation as well as occasional manual trading and dispatching, always having a close to 100% automation of the activities at sight.

Your role:

Being close to the heart of Statkraft Continental Dispatch and Power Operations, you will find yourself working in a positive, highly international and professional surrounding. Here you will closely cooperate with colleagues throughout most parts of the organisation such as traders, dispatchers, asset owners, project developers and our origination department. In this role you will have the following responsibilites:

  • Lead the development of strategies for short-term power trading in European energy markets
  • Develop new and improve our stack of models and algorithms based on time-series analysis, statistical analysis or machine-learning
  • Cooperate closely with our shift traders and improve the operational excellence of our Intraday trading business
  • Understand how short-term energy markets work. You represent the team as a major stakeholder in evaluating business activities and shape the commercial expansion strategy going further.
  • Manage project deliveries and drive business initiatives alongside the operational responsibilities.
  • Represent the energy management departments in cross-functional team setups, in which you will take a proactive or leading role.
  • As Intraday Power is trading continuously, 24/7 at 365 days a year, you will be part of a business hours day-shift system. You will occasionally be expected to assist through daytime standby duties on weekends or public holidays on an as-need basis, preferably from home. Special situations might require presence in the office.

About you:

  • Relevant working experience in a (energy) trading environment, ideally front office experience in European power markets
  • An above average university degree in Economics, Business Sciences, Natural Sciences or Engineering
  • Strong background in mathematics and statistics, hands-on coding experience (e.g. Python, Matlab or R)
  • High level of intrinsic motivation and strong commercial mind-set
  • Team player with a high level of commitment when dealing with individual responsibility
  • Flexible, accurate and capable of further developing the business
  • Fluent in English, good command of German or other languages are a plus
