Postdoctoral fellowship – The neurobiology of sleep and wake in health and depression

The Division of Mental health and Addiction, Psychosis Research Unit, Oslo University Hospital and Centre of Excellence The Norwegian Centre for Mental Disorders Research (NORMENT) offers a one year fulltime (100%) - alternatively two year half-time (50%) - postdoctoral fellowship position. The project is also affiliated with the Norwegian network on mood disorders (NORMOOD).

NORMENT runs a multicenter study involving all psychiatric hospital departments in Oslo and several research groups at the University of Oslo. The purpose of the programme is to study how biological/genetic, psychological and environmental factors contribute to severe mental disorders.

Project
In the present project, we assess the structure and function of the brain after sleep and sleep deprivation using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based techniques. The project has two main aims: 1) to increase our knowledge of why we sleep and 2) to clarify the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the rapid antidepressant effects of acute sleep deprivation. The project thus recruits healthy participants and currently depressed individuals; all undergo clinical characterization and the patients are examined by the study psychiatrists. Then, all participants undergo functional and structural MRI at the Oslo University Hospital, Rikshospitalet, before and after sleep and sleep deprivation. The successful candidate will analyze and publish already collected clinical and MRI data and contribute to the ongoing data collection.
