Postdoc/PhD student
Forskning og utvikling
Two 3-year positions (Postdoc/PhD student) are available in a project funded by the Research Council of Norway: Estimating causal effects of medication and special education on school performance of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) using Norwegian registry data.
The positions are within the Department of Child Health and Development in the Division of Mental and Physical Health. The department consists of about 30 employees, working with research projects covering a broad range of topics related to risk- and protective factors for child health and development. The department coordinates the work within NIPH’s strategic developmental plan for mental health and prevention in children and youth and has extensive collaborations with other departments in the institute and national and international researchers.
About the project. Medication and special education are part of the treatment of ADHD. Even though these treatments are ubiquitous and cause considerable costs, it is unclear if they have any long-term positive effects. The project examines simple and combined effects of medication and special education on school performance.
The project will use observational data to estimate long-term effects of treatments. We will analyse detailed registry data, including data from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa), on mental health diagnoses, medication, school performance, and special education and use structural models and Bayesian estimation to obtain the best possible estimates of causal effects. The Postdoc/PhD student will have the opportunity to implement the project goals based on their own methodological expertise and to acquire new expertise and skills. Here you find some more details about the project.
Tasks. The Postdoc and PhD student will be responsible for researching effects of special education or medication, respectively. The specific allocation of topics will depend on the qualifications, interests and background of the employed Postdoc and PhD student. We welcome applicants to elaborate on their research interests and qualifications.
Research environment. Guido Biele leads the project and will supervise the PhD/PostDoc. The project team includes collaborators at NIPH (pharmacology & education), University of Oslo (biostatistics), Karolinska Institute (ADHD medication & school performance), NTNU Social Research, and Northumbria University (special education). The postdoc and PhD student are encouraged to interact with groups inside and outside the NIPH who work in project-related areas (e.g., biostatistics/causal inference, psychology, psychiatry, education, pharmacology).
