PhD position in epidemiology - ADHD medication use and safety in pregnancy

We have a 3-year position available as a PhD student working on a project funded by the Research Council of Norway - ADHD Medication in Pregnancy: Understanding the population and outcomes related to treatment use and discontinuation. The position is within the Department of Chronic Diseases and Ageing and affiliated with NIPH’s Centre for Fertility and Health.
 
The ADHD Medication in Pregnancy project sets out to understand risks associated with use or discontinuation of drug treatment for ADHD during pregnancy. The project will use valuable existing data sources including population-based national health registries from Norway and Sweden and the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa). We will be collaborating with researchers in Canada and Sweden for high quality studies that aim to generate new knowledge that will empower women with ADHD to make informed treatment choices and advance research on the safe use of medicines during pregnancy.

 

The Department of Chronic Diseases and Ageing is responsible for epidemiologic research in the areas of non-communicable diseases, diet, physical activity and social inequality in health, including a focus on elderly health and on drug use in the population. Within the Department of Chronic Diseases and Ageing, you will be part of the pharmacoepidemiology research group with expertise in pharmacy, medicine, statistics, and epidemiology. As a PhD student affiliated with the Centre for Fertility and Health, you will be part of a multidisciplinary research team consisting of epidemiologists, geneticists, demographers, and other social scientists from Norway and abroad.
 
As a PhD student you will be enrolled in the PhD program at the University of Oslo. Some traveling should be expected and there are possibilities for research visits abroad during the PhD period.

Work tasks
  • Conduct research including statistical analyses of population-based data according to the description of the ADHD Medication in Pregnancy grant
  • Write and publish at least 3 scientific papers which will be part of the PhD thesis
  • Communicate results academically and also in a popular scientific way to the general public
  • Collaborate and communicate with a larger network of researchers
  • You may contribute to writing further applications for funding and to ongoing research in other projects (depending on interest and capacity)
  • The research fellow must, together with supervisors, complete the project description and apply for admission to the PhD program at the University of Oslo, within 6 months of starting
Qualifications
  • Have the necessary qualifications to be enrolled as a PhD student at the University of Oslo
  • A degree in medicine or pharmacy, or a master’s degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, psychology, or related field
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English; Knowledge of a Scandinavian language is an advantage
  • Knowledge of concepts from epidemiology and statistics is an advantage
  • Experience with using statistical software such as R, STATA, or SPSS is an advantage
  • Past experience with research is an advantage
  • Knowledge of the Norwegian health care system and Nordic health registries is an advantage
