Job Summary:

DNO is a Norwegian oil and gas operator focused on the Middle East-North Africa region and the North Sea. Founded in 1971, DNO is Norway’s oldest oil company. With a leading position in terms of reserves and production in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, DNO produces around 110,000 barrels of oil per day from the flagship Tawke field.

DNO is seeking a Field Medic who will be providing 24/7 on-site emergency, primary and preventive care with minimum medical supervision and support to DNO & Contractor personnel in support of their Kurdistan operations. To provide day-2-day medical mentorship and supervision of national Doctors under the direction of the BU Medical Adviser (BUMA).

Required Mindset for Position: Providing healthcare in a DNO remote location requires the Field Medic (FM) to adopt a different approach to work than that of working in a normal working location e.g. hospital. The required difference in mindset for the DNO FM includes:

Accountability: The FM behaviors and actions impacts not only on patient's safety, but also the DNO site's operational readiness, business continuity, reputation and legal liability.

Breadth: The FM needs to possess a broad range of knowledge and skill relating to health. In addition to knowledge of the usual branches of medicine and surgery, the FM will also need to utilise his knowledge and skills in areas such as pharmacy, mental health, occupational health, health management, human factors and operational medicine. In addition to health, the FM will also need to understand HSE issues that are relevant to the workers' health (e.g. water systems, exhaust fumes, engineering controls for noise and chemicals).

Flexibility: There are many factors Inherent to working in remote locations which require adaptability, flexibility and resilience on the part of the FM. This includes a fast-changing operational tempo, sudden crises, extreme environments (e.g. heat, cold, security), and limited supplies and support.

Leadership: Successful health delivery in remote locations requires the FM to be able to Influence without formal authority.

Collaboration: In order to successfully deliver health, the FM requires support from workers, supervisors, and managers and their back-to-back colleagues. A collaborative mindset helps the FM to build trust, establish strong working relationships and influence.

Curiosity (Enquiring): A mindset of curiosity encourages risk identification, assessment, exploration of opportunities and problem solving.

Moral Courage: FM’s often need to make difficult clinical decisions in difficult circumstances, need to hold difficult conversations with employees, supervisors and management.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Field Medic (FM) is responsible for providing:

  • Emergency management of ill or injured workers in DNO’s remote locations;
  • Frontline delivery of primary healthcare;
  • Frontline delivery of preventive care (e.g. occupational health, health promotion) and health administration (e.g. managing a site clinic, managing a pharmacy, record keeping, communications skills, implementing health programs).

Focus Areas – Emergency Medicine:

  • Provide Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pre Hospital Trauma Life Support.
  • Manage multiple casualty incidents (including develop and communicate an initial scene report, perform primary triage, apply immediately necessary lifesaving treatment and perform secondary triage).
  • Manage common medical emergencies (e.g. myocardial infarction, acute asthma, and diabetic ketoacidosis).
  • Manage common surgical emergencies (e.g. acute abdomen, acute appendicitis, strangulated hernia, acute urinary retention).
  • Manage common traumatic Injuries (e.g. fractures, head injury, eye injuries).
  • Manage patient transfer and medical evacuation (including the preparation of a patient prior to movement and medical evacuation).
  • Manage common psychiatric emergencies (e.g. attempted suicide, acute depression, psychosis, violent behaviors).

Note:
Any FM training in Emergency Medicine must ensure that the FM is able to perform all the above activities


Focus Areas – Primary Healthcare

  • Perform primary healthcare consultations.
  • Identify and manage common and significant complications arising from common chronic Illnesses (e.g. cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, gastrointestinal, urological, musculoskeletal, neurological, dermatological, infectious, ENT, ophthalmological, sexual health and mental illnesses).
  • Manage common minor Injuries and Illnesses (e.g. contact dermatitis, foreign object in the eye, minor burns).
  • Perform minor surgery (e.g. local anesthesia, wound care).
  • Dispense, and demonstrate awareness of pharmacology and polypharmacology of chronic illnesses.

Note:
Any FM training in Primary Healthcare must ensure that the FM is able to perform all the above activities.


Focus Areas – Preventive Medicine

  • Carry out Health Risk Assessment’s (HRA, using the results the HRA results to implement and monitor workplace health controls.
  • Carryout for Fitness to Work (FTW) Medical Assessment’s
  • Carry out Incident Investigation and Reporting when nominated. Describe the industry's occupational illness and Injury reporting requirements. Appling medical confidentiality whilst supporting the incident Investigation and reporting.
  • Develop and Implement Workplace Health Promotion Program (WHPP). Implement a WHPP, focusing on behavioral change including: Nutrition and diet, Exercise, Smoking cessation.
  • Infectious Disease Outbreak Prevention, identify common communicable disease symptoms, understand and implement local isolation procedures, escalate outbreaks of infectious disease appropriately, implement hygiene, sanitation and other containment measures, and initiate contact tracing.
  • Operational Medicine. Basic understanding of the health impacts of onsite work activities that may be beyond his training (e.g. those relating to tropical medicine, aviation medicine, and travel medicine).

Note:
Any FM training in Preventative Medicine must ensure that the FM is able to perform all the above activities.


Focus Areas – Health Administration

  • Manage a remote Site Clinic pharmacy.
  • Manage clinic record keeping.
  • Manage medical equipment (including facilitating equipment maintenance and calibration).
  • Plan, communicate, and coordinate health programs.
  • Use IT tools (e.g. word processors, spreadsheets, electronic presentations, and electronic communications).
  • Communicate effectively using Tele-medicine where available.
  • Follow company clinical governance policy.
  • Provide daily, weekly and monthly reports to Site Managers and Field Medical Adviser as required.

Note:
Any FM training in Health Administration must ensure that the FM is able to perform all the above activities


Training of Others:

  • Train nominated staff in workplace first aid and automated external defibrillation (AED). To ensure competent training provision, the FM must be able to deliver: Workplace first aid and Automated External Defibrillation (AED).
  • Directly support the Senior Field Medic and Field Medical Adviser in mentoring/training national Doctors against the agreed competency framework.

Qualifications & Experience:

To ensure competent practice, prior to working in any DNO remote locations, the FM must possess the following:

  • A current internationally recognised professional registration with a relevant national regulatory body, e.g. HCPC or NAEMT.
  • At least 3-years of clinical working experience in an Emergency Medicine setting.
  • 3 year working experience in a Primary Healthcare setting.
  • Oral and Written English fluently.
  • Previous remote/hostile area medical delivery experience.
  • Holds current trauma certification and ACLS, or equivalent training and certification.
  • A strong background in pre-hospital care training/education delivery.
  • Maintain a professional portfolio and continual professional development through CME/CPD.

The role reports to BU Medical Advisor and will be based on site (field based). The contract duration will be fixed term 12 months and work schedule will be rotational type working 29 days on / 27 days off.
