Data Scientist Demand Forecasting (m/f/d) - London

The Continental Energy & Market Access unit is responsible for the energy management of Statkraft’s and 3rd party assets and market access business across Continental Europe and the UK (currently Germany, UK, Belgium, Ireland, France, Turkey and South East Europe).

The Algorithmic Trading and Analysis Team is responsible for developing and implementing algorithmic trading and virtual power plant solutions that automatically balance renewables, trade and steer asset flexibility in real-time and run proprietary trading activities. Additionally, the team is responsible for developing and managing renewables and demand forecasts in order to commercially optimize Statkraft’s portfolio in the relevant energy markets.

We are looking for an addition to the Algorithmic Trading and Analysis Team to support the growing UK Retail customer business where we have to handle big data sets in order to create reliable demand forecasts for a portfolio of thousands of metering points.

Your role:

The data scientist will primarily support the UK retail business by providing the best short- and long-term consumption forecast of our customer portfolio. This forecast serves as a basis for hedging and trading activities at different trading desks. Additionally, he/she will work on other ad-hoc assignments in modelling and analysis. The data scientist will have responsibilities including but not limited to the following:

  • Build data pipelines to pull together information from different source systems; integrate, consolidate, cleanse and structure the data for use in forecasting, modelling and reporting
  • Monitor and evaluate forecasting models
  • Provide support in troubleshooting data and forecasting issues, operations, and system development
  • Work collaboratively with a wide range of departments, including operations, portfolio management, risk control, back office etc.
  • Communicate and engage with customers to ensure smooth joint operations and maintain business relationship;
  • Coordinate and stay on top of the analysis performed in other parts of Statkraft
  • Regularly perform and present ad-hoc analysis for senior management

Your profile:

  • Excellent university degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g. statistics, mathematics, computer science, engineering…) or relevant work experience
  • Solid programming and data analysis skills, e.g. in Python or R. Familiarity with database language SQL
  • Strong knowledge and experience of predictive modelling, timeseries analysis, regression, statistical analysis, data manipulation
  • Prior experience of forecasting in the UK energy market, especially at a retail level, is an asset
  • Commercial mind-set
  • Good communicative skills
  • Team player with a proactive and independent working style
  • Self-driven, innovative, creative, articulate, able to multi-task and can present ideas and results to non-technical audience.
